Investment in education and R&D must be government’s top priority: Pranab Mukherjee

Investment in education and R&D must be government’s top priority: Pranab Mukherjee

On Monday, Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee urged the government to invest more in the sectors related to education and research and development.

“Today, not as a former President but as a citizen of India, I want greater investment in education and research and the country will benefit from this,” Mukherjee said while delivering endowment lecture at the Ramkrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark.

As he urged the government he was also regretful of the fact that budget allocation for the education and R&D sectors are not up to the mark and government needs to be more serious about them.

He cited an example of Germany, who stood strong during the Eurozone crisis. For Germany, it was possible because of their greater focus on R&D area.

“In 1991, the budget on education was six percent of the GDP but in 2018-19 Union budget allocation is just 3.6 percent of the national GDP, though the allocation of Rs 80,500 crore may seem to be a huge sum.”

Mukherjee also reminded the government that by 2025 India will have the largest young population with the biggest workforce in the world and it is primary to turn this population into a suitable workforce or there will be a disaster.

“If we are unable to convert this population into a suitable workforce and not able to create jobs by adopting new technologies, then instead of ‘demographic dividend’ it will be a ‘demographic disaster’,” Mukherjee

said.

UP Board results of class 10 and 12 are now live

UP Board results of class 10 and 12 are now live

On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) announced the results of the state board exams. This year the results of both classes 10 and 12 witnessed a sharp decline in the pass percentage of the students. This year, the pass percentage of class 10 and 12 is 75.16% and 72.43% respectively. Last year, the pass percentage was 81.6 for class 10 and 82.5 for class 12.

This year, more than 66 lakh students registered for the exams of which 56,32,860 appeared.

The huge drop in the number of students appearing for the exam was due to government’s crackdown on the cheating mafia in the state. Government took stringent steps to keep the incidents of the cheating under control this year. Exam halls were monitored through CCTV cameras and coded answer sheets were given to the students to prevent the incidents of mass cheating.

Director of the education board Awadh Naresh Sharma said, “The exams have been conducted in a transparent manner and with complete honesty under the watch of CCTV cameras.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday congratulated “students who had successfully taken the exams and got good results without cheating” and said that prices will be announced for the top 10 scrores.

“I am very happy that in record time, within one month of the exams, the results have been declared. These results are a slap on the face of those elements who play with the future of our students by facilitating cheating,” he said.

Rajneesh Shukla, a resident of Fatehpur, and Akash Maurya from Barabanki, both scored 93.20 per cent and emerged statewide Class XII

toppers. Meanwhile, Anjali Verma, a resident of Allahabad, emerged the Class X topper with a score of 96.33 per cent.
